The science.

Checked against the app on 11 October 2026.

Every number in MyPotential comes from a fixed formula, run on your own logs. The targets follow public health guidance, from bodies like the World Health Organization. Here is each one, and why.

What it knows, and when

It won't guess before it knows. Each step starts on the day your data can carry it.

  1. Day1

    A score for today

Once 2 pillars are logged. While the day is still open the score is capped, so an early number cannot flatter you.

  2. Day2

    Potential

From your first finished day. Today is never in it. Marked early until day 7.

  3. Day3

    Recovery, measured

With Apple Health, after 3 nights of heart data, compared only with your own nights. WHOOP and Oura send their own from the start.

  4. Day10

    The one thing, named

From your own data, across up to 28 days. Before this it only shows today's biggest drag, and says so.

  5. Day12

    Your link, tested

Once both pillars have 12 logged days, the Why page says whether your days match.

  6. Day14

    Your real burn

Your calorie target starts learning from your food and weigh-ins, at most 150 kcal a week.

  7. Day28

    The full window

Potential and the one thing now read 28 days. Older days count less, so a change shows fast.

Your score

Potential starts at 100. Each pillar takes points off for the gap between what you did and your target, weighted for your goal. It averages your last 28 days, and recent days count more.

How we calculate it
  • A pillar's cost for a day is 100 × its weight × the credit you missed, divided by the total weight of the pillars you logged.
  • Partial progress is squared: half your target earns a quarter of the credit.
  • A pillar you did not log is left out, never counted as zero.
  • A day 14 days old counts half as much. Today is never in it.
  • Your quiz answers pick the weights. Change them any time in Settings, under Scoring, and past days are scored again.
Points per pillar for each goal. Pillars with no data drop out, and the rest share the total.

The one thing

For the first 10 days it only shows today's biggest drag, and says that is all it is. From day 10 it names the pillar costing you the most points across your last 28 days.

How we calculate it
  • A pillar needs 3 days of its own data before it can be named.
  • A new pillar has to cost 3 points more before the name changes, so it does not flicker.
  • Watch history from before you installed counts, on days it measured at least 2 pillars.
  • Meds is never named.

Why it holds you back

Some pillars reach others. Short sleep, for one, can make training feel harder. The app tests one such link per pillar on your own days, chosen before it looks at your data.

How we calculate it
  • Say sleep is your drag. It removes your overall trend and your weekday habits, splits your days into short nights and normal ones, and compares training after each.
  • Then it shuffles those labels 2,000 times, within the same week, to see how often chance does as well.
  • It says your data agrees only when chance matches it 5% of the time or less. It needs at least 12 logged days of each pillar.
  • Why one question and not a search: test enough pairs and something always looks linked by luck. So it commits to its question first.
  • It never says one thing caused another.

Recovery and Strain

Recovery says how ready you are. Strain says how hard the day was. Neither one is part of your score.

How we calculate it
  • With WHOOP or Oura: their own number, as is.
  • With Apple Health: heart rate variability and resting heart rate during sleep, against your own last 60 nights. Never against other people.
  • Measured after 3 nights, marked early until 14. Without a watch, an estimate from your sleep and how you feel, labelled as one.
  • If your resting heart rate runs well above your normal, the reading is held low. It flags; it never diagnoses.
  • Strain is WHOOP's own, or a 0 to 21 load from workout heart rate, sets lifted and everyday movement.
